Lacrosse Drills - Here is one just for fun
Its great to have a couple of lacrosse drills that are just great fun for the kids. It will keep them coming back week after week. This was one of my favorites when I was starting out.
Split your group in half and send one half to the face off X with all of the balls and one group out to the side of the goal. As a coach, you should stand half way between the two groups. You yell out a number between 2 and 6 which is the number of players that should attack the goal from the top (one must have the ball). At the same time, that number less 1 player runs in from the side to defend the goal. So if you yell “five”, four from the low group run in to defend on the five that are coming in from the top.
Once a goal is scored or the ball is turned over, the play is over and the players should run back to the group they came from and wait for their next turn.
Keep the numbers you call out varied and do the drill 10 or 15 times then have the groups swap and go again for 10 or 15 plays. You can keep score if you want to but its not really important.
Lacrosse drills like this are great fun but it also teaches the kids some very important lacrosse basics. To pass the ball to the open player because they will always have an extra man and it teaches the defense unit to communicate and slide to cover the extra man and play as a team.
It is such a great drill, we even use it in my senior mens team for a bit of fun and variety.
On the last play that you do for this drill, its fun if you call out something like “ten” and a whole bunch of kids run in laughing and chasing but this can cause a bit too much excitement so its usually only good to do if it is the last lacrosse drills for the training session.
